He was born around 876 in the village of Skrino, Dupnitsa region. He died on August 18, 946 at the age of 70. During his life he chose the difficult path of hermitage. His days are spent fasting and praying. Followers gather around him, forming a monastic fraternity. Before leaving this world, St. Ivan Rilski wrote a testament to his disciples and to the whole nation, which still sounds instructive today: so as not to turn it into a corrosive grain and not to spread evil among the good. ”
This day is also celebrated the day of the Bulgarian doctor on the initiative of the Bulgarian Medical Union, which chooses as its patron Ivan Rilski Chudotvorets, a holiday also of the miners and the Sofia Theological Seminary.
